Noida: Upper Ganga Canal to be closed for a month

The Upper Ganga Canal will be closed for a month for annual maintenance from October 8 till November 7.

The Noida Authority officials, however, said that it will not cause any shortage of water, as majority of the supply during this period will be sourced from groundwater and renny wells.

“The suspension of Ganga water supply will not create a crisis as we will continue supplying boring water. We have enough stored water which will be sufficient for a few days. Later on, we will use boring water mixed with Ganga water,” said SC Arora, project engineer of Jal Department in Noida Authority.
Meanwhile the residents complained that dirty water is being supplied in some areas. Peeyush Aggarwal, a resident of Sector 19, said, “There is no water crisis right now. But the boring water that we are receiving is dirty and yellow in colour. It has a bad smell. It’s not potable water. People are buying water from the market for drinking and other purposes.”

The Ganga water is supplied from Haridwar to Dasna through the 185-km-long Upper Ganga Canal.

The 19-km-long pipeline takes the water to the treatment plant in Pratap Vihar in Ghaziabad. The Ganga water is processed at this plant. Nearly 360 million litres of Ganga water is supplied to Noida and Ghaziabad on a daily basis. More than 20 lakh people receive Ganga water for drinking purposes.
