Sharp increase in temperature brings relief from biting cold in Delhi

 


The citizens in Delhi got relief from biting cold conditions in the last three days. The minimum temperature was recorded at 10.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning. 

The minimum temperatures have increased consistently since Monday. It was 6.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 5.3 degrees Celsius on Monday.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather is expected to be comfortable in the next two to three days. 

The reason for the rise in minimum temperature has been easterly winds, which are not as cold as westerlies coming from snow-capped mountains in the Himalayas.

The weather department said that the Western Disturbance will lead to light rain on Thursday and Friday. The unseasonal rains could also bring thunderstorms, lightning and hail.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature had increased to 28.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which is six notches more than normal.

Cold wave recorded in Delhi with minimum temp of 3.8 degrees C

 


Cold wave returned to Delhi again as minimum temperature dropped to 3.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday morning. The drop in temperature happened due to cold, dry westerly winds blowing across the city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) declares a cold wave when the minimum temperature drops to 4 degrees Celsius. A severe cold wave is when the minimum is 2 degrees Celsius or less.

On Tuesday as well, cold wave had gripped the national capital as the minimum temperature dropped to 2.1 degrees Celsius, which was seven notches below normal. 

As per an IMD official, cold wave is likely on Friday as well. The minimum temperature is expected to be around four degrees Celsius.

A cold day was recorded on Sunday when the maximum temperature had dropped to 15 degrees Celsius. It was six notches below normal.

Cold wave likely to return for next three days in Delhi

 


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that minimum temperature is expected to fall in Delhi from Monday. 

The weather department also said that the cold wave conditions are likely to return from Monday. 

On Sunday, Delhi experienced a cold day as maximum temperature fell to 15 degrees Celsius which was six notches below normal. It was also the lowest this month. The minimum temperature was recorded at 8.8 degrees Celsius.

A cold day is declared when the minimum temperature is less than 10 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below the normal.

As per the IMD, the minimum temperature is likely to fall by three to four degrees Celsius in the next three days. An official said that a cold wave is expected in the city on Tuesday. 

He said, “Western disturbance will result in widespread snowfall in the upper hills of Jammu Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. As a result, cold and dry winds coming from the peaks will bring the temperature down to four degrees Celsius.”

Slight relief from cold expected in next two days in Delhi

 


The minimum temperature was recorded at 7.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. 

The weather department said that the minimum temperature is likely to increase slightly over the next two days due to the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance.

An IMD official said, “The minimum temperature is likely to increase slightly as a fresh Western Disturbance will start affecting the Western Himalayan region from Friday onwards.”

He said that the Western Disturbance will result in widespread snowfall in upper peaks of the Western Himalayas. “Cold and dry winds coming from the mountains will drop the temperature to 4 degrees Celsius by Monday,” he added.

On January 22, dense fog is expected to come back to the national capital. Due to lesser wind speed, people would slightly get relief from cold.

Cold wave in Delhi as minimum temp drops to 3.2 degrees Celsius


 

Delhi experienced cold wave conditions as minimum temperature dipped to 3.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning. The India Meteorological Department said that a drop in temperature has happened due to icy winds coming from snow-capped mountains in Western Himalayas.

An official from the IMD confirmed it by saying that cold wave conditions were recorded at the Safdarjung Observatory. He said that the minimum temperature was recorded at 3.2 degrees Celsius, which was four notches below normal.

The IMD also said that the cold wave conditions are likely to persist in the national capital for the next two days. Cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature dips to 4 degrees Celsius. A severe cold wave is when the minimum is 2 degrees Celsius or below. 

Moreover, the visibility also dropped in Delhi due to heavy fog cover on Wednesday morning. Visibility was restricted to 50 metres at the Palam observatory and to 200 metres at the Safdarjung observatory. 

Fog is classified as “very dense” when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, and “dense” when it is between 51 and 200 metres.

Winds from Himalayas drop temp in Delhi; expected to dip further


 

As the western Himalayan region received fresh snowfall, the cold winds coming from there have caused a dip in the temperature in Delhi. The minimum temperature dropped to 4.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 17.5 degrees Celsius, which is three notches below normal at the city’s base station in Safdarjung.

The India Meteorological Department has said that the city of Delhi is likely to witness even more colder days ahead. 

The officials said that near cold day conditions were recorded at isolated places. As per the IMD, after the passage of western disturbance, the wind direction has shifted to north-westerly and cold waves are coming from snow-capped mountains to Delhi. 

Delhi was witnessing above normal temperatures till Monday due to persistent cloud cover. Delhi's minimum temperature was recorded at 7 degrees on Monday, 7.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday, 10.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday, 9.6 degrees Celsius on Friday and 14.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
