The Ganga water supply in Indirapuram will remain suspended for a month due to the annual desilting exercise of the Upper Ganga Canal. The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) said that
the water supply will remain shut from October 8 to November 7.
Meanwhile, GDA has planned to hire seven to eight water tankers daily to cater to the residents’ requirements.
Executive Engineer of GDA Manvendra Singh said that GDA will run its tube wells to supply sufficient water to the area. “We will take the help of Jal Nigam in case of an emergency,” he said.
Ahinsa Khand II currently receives four hours of Ganga water supply daily. Residents of the locality said that they will have to depend on ground water till Ganga water supply resumes.
Every year, the irrigation department cleans the silt from the Upper Ganga Canal. The water from the canal in Haridwar is disrupted for this.
The Ganga water is supplied from Haridwar to Dasna through the 185-km-long Upper Ganga Canal. The 19-km-long pipeline takes the water to the treatment plant in Pratap Vihar in Ghaziabad. The processed Ganga water—nearly 360 million litres—is then supplied to more than 20 lakh people in Noida and Ghaziabad.
