The 75th Independence Day is just round the corner and it is the time of year when everybody can’t contain their excitement. August 15 brings with it a wave of patriotism throughout the country every year. It is the time when we all unite to be the flag bearers of our nation.
Everyone has their own ways of celebrating Independence Day. We all remember the extended assemblies and cultural functions of our schools with patriotic songs playing in the back filling us all with sheer excitement. We have come a long way since 1947 and still, this day brings the entire country together to celebrate our independence and thank our freedom fighters whom we owe it to.
This year, Independence Day falls on a long weekend which calls for the families and friends to sit together and enjoy the day. Our film industry has never shied away from giving us some classic patriotic movies that will leave us all loving our country a little more.
If you’re confused on what to do this weekend to celebrate Independence Day, don’t worry! We have got you covered with a list of movies for your patriotism:
Rang De Basanti
A beautiful story of college friends turned rebels who resonate with the heroes of the Indian freedom struggle. The movie is a celebration of not just our country but of youth as well. It is bound to give you goosebumps at certain instances and make you nostalgic about your college days and the days when there was no worry in the world. With an amazing cast and plot, this is a movie that you can never go wrong with. Also, the album of this movie contains mood-lifters and songs that’ll make you cry, a full on package. You can watch it on Netflix.
Lagaan
If this movie has to be described in one word, it is ‘classic’. Every frame, every dialogue of this film just screams iconic. When this movie came out, it was something the Indian audience hadn’t seen before. It revolutionised cinema in so many ways and it is only fair that it got its due. If it has been long since you last watched this classic, go and bless yourself by watching it one more time this Sunday. Yes, it has a long playtime and you won’t complain about it once you start watching it. It is available for you on Netflix.
Swades
A movie that resonated with so many people and is still taught about in film schools, it certainly is one of the best by our very own King of Bollywood. It is subtle in its approach with its heart in the right place. The movie will leave you inspired and overwhelmed. You can stream it on Netflix.
Lakshya
This is a movie that is loved by many, especially by the millennials. The story of a young boy with no ambitions to join the Indian Army and finding a purpose, it is as much a coming of age story as it is a patriotic story and that is what makes it so special. The fact that it is directed by Farhan Akhtar is a cherry on top. With amazing tracks and good plotline, it is a must watch if you want a dose of encouragement and motivation. You can watch it on Amazon Prime Video.
Raazi
With a female protagonist for a change, this movie is delightful to watch, especially for Alia Bhatt’s performance. Again, there is no unnecessary hatred here, just sheer sincerity and love for one’s nation. It is a well-crafted film which will leave you in awe. Also, sharing screen with Alia is Vicky Kaushal, another actor who you can always rely on to do justice to his role. The dynamics of Indo-Pakistan relations portrayed in this movie are not loud. Watching this movie will be a thrilling experience and it is available on Amazon Prime Video.
Shershah
This is the youngest film in this list as it was released a couple of days back only, however, the amount of acclaim it is collecting from the entire country is enough testament to how good it is. Based on the life of Kargil hero Captain Vikram Batra, it is Siddharth Malhotra’s best performance so far. The movie is as humane as possible and is bound to make you smile, fall in love with Captain Vikram Batra and his charming happy go lucky personality and break your heart in the end. If you want to watch something you haven’t seen before, you can definitely watch it on Amazon Prime Video.
We hope this helps to sort out your weekend plans. Even if you have watched all of these movies, Independence Day is just another reason to watch any of them again.
