Despite EPCA ban on construction activities till Nov 10, things remain the same

With Delhi’s air quality inching closer and closer to the “severe” category, the Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA) banned all construction activities from November 1st to 10th, but Dwarka seems to have turned a blind eye to the order, as construction work continues on roads and elsewhere, increasing the dust content of the air.

PN Mishra, a resident of Sector 4, complained, “Inside DDA pockets, illegal construction activities has hardly stopped and same is the story for cooperative group housing societies. It’s really sad that even for 10 days we can’t put a stop to this!”

General secretary of Federation of CGHS, Dwarka, Sudha Sinha, added, “If construction activities are still on, then it’s the fault of the management in CGHS societies. They should be prosecuted — isn’t it? We from the federation appeal to the CGHS societies to obey the rules and support the efforts to curb the pollution.”

Even the authorities are violating the ban.

The DDA has not put a stop to activities that increase the dust content — neither has it is ensured that water is sprinkled to mitigate the impact of dust.

There’s more.

A truck of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is seen dumping dust in open in Sector 18B. Professor Sumit Dookia took photographs of the same and shared them with City Spidey.

Ramesh Mumukshu, an environment activist, and a resident of Sector 16B, said, “There must be seriousness from the side of authorities to implement the directive otherwise it’s pointless.”
