Alert residents caught a chain snatcher at Aashiyana Chowk in Raj Nagar Extension on Thursday night after he was trying to escape grabbing gold chain of a woman. The incident was reported at around 10 pm near the chowk, said the police.
According to the police, the accused, identified as Dheeraj alias Dhanajay alias Pathan, came to the area with his partner on a motorcycle. After snatching chain of a woman, the duo tried to escape but one of them fell from the bike and was caught by the crowd.
Rajat Kumar Aggrawal, a resident of Raj Nagar Extension, was the one who nabbed the accused. He is also a complainant in the case.
Speaking to City Spidey, Aggrawal said that the accused after snatching the chain rushed towards the bike which his partner was riding. “He tried to hop on to the speeding bike but got disbalanced and fell on the road. He then tried to run away but was caught,” he added.
The police said that the accused has sustained severe head injury and mild injuries all over his body.
The police have recovered a country-made pistol from his possession. A case under Section 393 of IPC, attempt to commit robbery, and Section 3/25 of Arms Act, illegal possession of firearms, has been registered against the accused.
According to the police, 30-year-old Dheeraj is a history-sheeter and was on bail for the past two and a half years. He has been previously booked in 62 cases, mainly in North Delhi, and is known by many names.
Dheeraj was born in Phoolwariya village of Mujaffarpur, Bihar, and has done schooling till class VI. According to the police, he has been committing petty thefts for long and was first arrested by Ghaziabad Police in May, 2010.
