Gurgaon: Loud speakers installed at 64 locations to manage traffic

In a move to streamline the chaotic traffic of the Millennium City, loud speakers have been installed by the Gurgaon Police at 64 locations across the city to give live traffic updates, diversions ahead, and even urge the commuters to follow traffic rules. Gurgaon News

According to the Commissioner of Police, KK Rao, the project will cost Rs 24 Lakh. “For the first time in the country, live streaming of traffic updates are being given through loud speakers,” Rao said.

Last week, the first speaker was installed at Huda City Centre traffic intersection and the rest were installed over the weekend after monitoring its performance.

The next set of speakers will be installed at major intersections in the city including Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, and Bakhtawar Chowk over the next month.

These loud speakers would also be used by the police to curb crime. “If there is a situation where someone has snatched a bag from a woman and is escaping on a motorcycle. Then we will announce vehicle’s number and other details through the loud speakers and ask people to stop him,” Rao added.

Though a similar project was earlier started in Chandigarh to announce pre-recorded messages, it did not have the provision of live updates, explained Rao.

The police personnel deployed at each intersection will be informed by the traffic control room and they would make announcements through the loud speakers. “This will help people avoid traffic jams as we will update the best routes through the loud speakers,” he said.

According to the commissioner, the speakers would be set up by private companies and the police have already taken tenders from different vendors. “We will first try the products from various companies before finalising any one. We are looking not only at the quality of the product but also the after sales service and maintenance,” said Rao.
