 Be it his contribution to literature or India's freedom struggle, Rabindranath Tagore's name is indelible in Indian history. Tagore, popularly known as the Bard of Bengal reshaped Bengali literature and music as Indian art of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was an exponent of the Bengali Renaissance who modernised Bengali art.

He was born on May 7, 1861, but according to the Bengali calendar, the Tagore Jayanti falls on the 25th day of the Boishakh month. This year in 2023, it will be celebrated on May 9 across the Bengali community in India. He was the first Indian and first non-European to achieve the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his exceptional work, Gitanjali which further established his literary reputation worldwide.

Tagore was also a prominent part of the Indian freedom movement. His poems evoked the feeling of nationalism in the Indian mass. In 1919, he renounced the knighthood award by British King George V which was awarded to him in 1915 to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Later, Jana Gana Mann written originally in Bangla by him was adopted (in its Hindi version) by the Constituent Assembly in 1950.
