Ranveer Singh’s journey began as Bittoo Sharma, a happy-go-lucky, laid-back guy from Delhi. Wearing casual T-shirts and plaid shirts over faded bootcut jeans and unkempt hair, he perfectly fit the bill as the boy-next-door. Today is Ranveer’s 36th birthday. It's an overwhelming feeling to realise that we've seen Ranveer Singh grow into a fine actor over the past decade. Starting from Band Baaja Baaraat to career-defining films like Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela and releasing iconic films like Gully Boy, Ranveer Singh sure has come a long way.
Ranveer Singh's style today is nothing like what it used to be a decade ago. In fact, the kind of films that he's done has had a huge impact on his personal style. Although now he chooses to be anything but conventional, seeing his filmography, one would realise how the characters that he played helped shaped that.
1. BAND BAAJA BAARAAT (2010)
Bittoo Sharma in Band Baaja Baaraat was a laid-back, extremely casual, college student. He's an amateur who's figuring the world around him, and this also reflects in his personal style, just like Ranveer Singh's style when he probably first entered the industry in 2010 (at the time Ranveer hadn't met Nitasha Gaurav who would transform his persona
entirely in the coming years).
2. LADIES V/S RICKY BAHL (2011)
Ranveer’s second character is that of a con artist where he plays multiple characters experimenting with different styles. The most memorable song from this film is Aadat Se Majboor, (wherein Ranveer surprises the industry with his rapping abilities that would factor in to inspire Zoya Akhtar to cast him for Gully Boy in later years) while dabbling with multiple characters, we're sure Ranveer Singh too was trying to find his signature style at this time since he was still only
a year old in the industry. So he stuck to conventional choices like a two-piece black suit for an award function, remember those days?
3. GOLIYON KI RASLEELA RAM-LEELA (2013)
In 2013, Ranveer Singh featured in three films, these included: Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Lootera, and Bombay Talkies. However, Ram-Leela was a career-defining film for Ranveer Singh. He had finally transformed from the boy-next-door with potential to an alpha-male in Ram-Leela. This not just reflected through his character but also the beard, his long hair and the piercings and also his public appearances, where he had started to assert his presence through his sense of style.
4. DIL DHADKNE DO (2015)
In Dil Dhadkne Do, Ranveer Singh goes back to basics with solid silhouettes that the character demands in the film.
In 2015, Ranveer Singh forayed into Ghaghra and discovered exciting gender-bending trends. So, we know that this is far from his personal style and just a character that he plays.
5. BAJIRAO MASTANI (2015)
For Bajirao Mastani, Ranveer Singh's character and the promotions both required Ranveer to dress like a Maratha. And Ranveer Singh wore the
character like a second skin. What do you guys think?
6. BEFIKRE (2016)
In 2016, Ranveer Singh's film Befikre came out. This was a break from the two major historical dramas that he was associated with. His style
was inspired by the likes of a millennial man.
7. PADMAAVAT (2018)
Ranveer's Alauddin Khilji was possibly one of the most spine-chilling impersonations of Khilji. For the film promotions, Ranveer grew a long beard and started experimenting with gender-fluid fusion wear, which also became synonymous to him in the following years.
8. GULLY BOY (2019)
We knew that Ranveer Singh could rap, but after Gully Boy, it was as if Ranveer Singh had channelled his pent-up energy into a new aesthetic. While Murad kept it simple in the film, outside of it Ranveer went all out with quirky trends like animal print and neon.
CitySpidey wishes Ranveer Singh a very happy birthday and success for future endeavours!
