GreNo Authority heavily fined for violating solid waste management rules

A state level monitoring committee constituted by National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday slapped a hefty fine on Greater Noida Authority for sharp violation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. The Authority is responsible for ensuring proper sanitation in the area.

The Authority had turned a plot, which was earmarked for the development of zoological and botanical park, into a dumpyard. Observing this, the monitoring committee has imposed a fine of Rs 2 crore on the Authority.

It also ordered the agency to ensure no more dumping of waste at this site. Moreover, it said that the dumped waste should also be removed within a stipulated time of one month starting now.

According to Justice DP Singh, who is a chairman of waste disposal monitoring committee, the Authority was using this parcel of land for dumping of waste despite an environment clearance granted for development of waste disposal site near Autholi, a local village in the city.

The committee also warned the administration in Ghaziabad for proper disposal of municipal waste of the city. Singh said that violation of the rules has also been observed in Ghaziabad where there is designated site for waste disposal.

Around 850 metric tonnes of waste are being generated from the city. But only 400 metric tons of waste is being disposed in environment friendly way. The committee also passed a proposal of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation which had plan of action for disposing 1,000 metric tonnes of waste per day.
