Maj. Nisheet Dogra of Shipra Apra Sapphire martyred on Sunday

It was a sad moment for everybody at Shipra Apra Sapphire of Indirapuram, as 27-year- old Indian Army Major, Nisheet Dogra, a resident there, lost his life on Sunday. He was stuck in an avalanche while commanding the independent tank squadron in North Sikkim on Saturday.

Their camp was hit while going for deployment in a tank regiment. He went missing after the heavy snowfall and after an intense search, his body was found buried under 5-6 feet snow on Sunday, Army said.

"After an intense search, at about 10 pm, the search party located Maj Nisheet Dogra, who was trapped under five-six feet of snow. The officer was given immediate medical aid. However, around midnight, the brave heart lost the battle and attained martyrdom in the line of duty," read an official statement from Indian Army on Sunday.

Major Dogra had been serving the army since the last 6 years. He inherited his love for the armed forces from his family.

"His grandfather was in Indian Army as well and this inspired him to choose this as a career. He was very patriotic," remembered Major's father, Umesh Chander Dogra.

Major Dogra was posted merely three weeks ago in Sikkim in 7 light cavalry.

Originally from Jammu, Major Dogra and his family had shifted to Indirapuram from New Delhi six years ago. He got married two years ago with Nikita Dogra, who lives with the Major's parents in Krishna Apra Sapphire.

Despite being grief-stricken, the father said, "I'm proud that my son martyred while serving the nation."

The Major’s remains will be flown to Delhi headquarters of Indian Army and handed over to the family today.
