Gandhi Jayanti: Thousands of residents participate in marathon at Rajnagar Extn

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, thousands of residents from Rajnagar Extension hit the road to spread awareness for the importance of good health, cleanliness and greenery. Over six thousands residents of all ages ran in a 5-km long marathon organised on Tuesday at Rajnagar Extension.

The event witnessed attendance of top officials of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation. Municipal Commissioner CP Singh and Mayor Asha Sharma appealed residents to work towards cleanliness of the city.

Speaking at the event, Singh appealed residents to shed off the hard regional feelings and develop a “Ghaziabadi” spirit.

He said that residents have a lot of affinity for their hometown and to make city better, people should love Ghaziabad as much as they love their hometown.

“We need to feel Ghaziabadi from the heart,” Singh said.

“To make sanitation of this city better, we all have to work collectively and for that, we must see Ghaziabad as our home,” Singh added.

The officials also encouraged residents to segregate the garbage at its source.  While referring Ghazipur landfill, they said that segregation is the only solution to handle the waste disposal in better manner.

Singh also patted the corporation’s back for performing well in the area of sanitation which was stated in a survey conducted by central government.

In Swaccha Survekshan 2018, a yearly sanitation survey of cities across country, Ghaziabad was placed at 36th position. It got a tag of “fastest mover” city in the area of cleanliness.

The event was organized by the joint effort of the residents and Sankalp trust.

The winners in the race were awarded certificates and cash prizes.

However, the motorists faced few hours of difficulty as the traffic from KDP roundabout was diverted to ease the marathon runners.
