The RWAs and managements of the affected societies are now planning to take the matter to the LG.
The open drain has become a cause of concern for the residents who live in the nearby societies mainly in sectors 3, 5 and 11. The drain is full of garbage and sewerage waste, making it a nuisance for the residents who are forced to live with foul smell, mosquitoes and flies.
For long, these residents have been discussing the subject on social media and WhatsApp groups, but now they are planning to join hands and launch a campaign.
General secretary of RWA of Sector 5 SFS Flats, Mahesh Gupta, said, “We have been discussing the subject for some time now and plan to approach the authorities collectively. Let’s see how effective it proves.”
Adarsh Apartments in Sector 3, which has hundreds of families, is one of the nearest and worst affected. Others affected include New Priyadarshini Apartments, Apoorva Apartments, Hind Apartments, Navin Apartments and Shakti Apartments in Sector 5, and Shahjahanabad Apartments in Sector 11.
Ex-general secretary of RWA of Adarsh Apartments, Uma Shankar, said, “The situation has only worsened over the years, and so has our health. All RWAs need to unite and approach higher officials for a permanent solution."
Residents, especially senior citizens and children, have developed respiratory problems and skin allergies. Electronic equipment too gets damaged frequently because of gas emanating from the drain.
President of New Priyadarshini Apartments, Ashok Upadhyay, said, “We want the portion of the drain near the societies to be covered. We have approached area MP, MLA, and councillor several, times but they don’t do anything.”
President of Dwarka Forum, Rejimon CK, has been writing on the subject to the higher officials for some time now. “We have been told that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) doesn’t allow covering of the drain. In that case, the civic bodies should ensure that the dumping of sewerage waste and garbage into the drain is stopped immediately.”
