Dwarka: Horticulture waste management only on paper; nothing concrete on ground

Horticulture waste is causing a lot of problems in Dwarka. Heaps of such waste can be seen on the footpaths and at the dhalao or other garbage dumping spots. The residents are blaming the apathy of officials for the ill-management of such waste in the area. Dwarka News

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has been a big failure in managing horticulture waste.

It has been more than two years since the solid waste management act was introduced by the ministry of environment. Under this, Dwarka was chosen as a pilot project.

The developments in this regard were only shown on paper. Many seminars, conferences and meetings with RWAs were conducted.

Workshops and the sensitisation programmes for the management of horticulture waste and doing composting in the neighbourhood parks were organised.

But, nothing concrete happened on the ground level.

The situation has gone down to such a level that officials have now stopped responding to the complaints of the residents. They are completely neglecting management of horticulture waste and composting in the area.

Whenever the officials have been contacted on the issue, they choose not to respond and also avoid the people.

There were few initiatives which were to be implemented on the ground at Dwarka’s B Ward. But, it got stuck because the pioneer of the concept, deputy commissioner, Vishwendra Singh, was transferred from the area.

Now, he has joined again in the area and the community is hopeful for a change. But, looking at the situation and the present state of the system, a perfectly managed system for horticulture waste seems to be a distant dream.
