Venting their ire, a group of protestors agitating against the landfill in Sector 123 met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Ghaziabad today and apprised him of the situation.
The CM, on his part, said that any landfill site should be made at a distance of 2 km from an area of human habitation — a stipulation also mandated by the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016. noida news
According to the rules, a landfill site should be situated at a distance of 100 metres from a riverbed, and 200 metres from water bodies, highways, habitations, public parks and water supply wells.
Sukheer Pehlawan, president, Kooda Ghar Virodh Sangharsh Samiti, told City Spidey, “We met the CM during his visit in Ghaziabad and told him about the effects of the landfill in Sector 123. It will affect lakhs of residents in the area — causing air pollution and ground water contamination.”
The CM also ordered officials to conduct a meeting with the residents tomorrow. Union minister and local MP Dr Mahesh Sharma and MLA Pankaj Singh are expected to be present at the meeting.
Noida Authority decided to set up a landfill site in Sector 123 and started digging the vacant plot there. This step was undertaken by the authority after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued an interim order on May 29, directing it to immediately stop dumping waste at a forest located in Sector 54.
The decision caused a furore and residents from Sector 117-122 and nearby villagers started conducting regular protests against the construction of the waste-to-energy plant.
