Traffic came to standstill in various parts of Delhi, including Connaught Place, as hundreds of members of the SC/ST community protested a Supreme Court on the SC/ST Act.
Things were especially bad outside Mandi House and ITO Metro stations, as protesters blocked roads and created massive traffic jams, leaving commuters stranded. The protesters also blocked one of the carriageways of Barakhamba Road, traffic police said.
A series of traffic advisories were put out on Twitter by the Delhi traffic police.
Here are the tweets posted by it:
“Traffic is disrupted on Janpath, Barakhamba Road, Mandi House and others areas in Lutyens’ Delhi.”
“Traffic Alert - Traffic is heavy at outer circle Connaught Place near Janpath due to demonstration. Kindly avoid the stretch.”
“Traffic Alert - Obstruction in traffic in the carriageway from Karkari Mod towards Karkardooma due to demonstration near Dayanand Marg red light. Kindly avoid the stretch.”
“Traffic Alert Motorists going towards Kalindi Kunj from Gazipur, Dallupura and DND are advice to avoid the stretch due to demonstration. Traffic has been diverted from Vasundhara Enclave."
Commuters on the stretches mentioned are requested to take alternative routes to avoid getting caught in traffic. Many parts of Connaught Place are still not cleared.
The protests that have engulfed the NCR are against a Supreme Court order that the protesters say dilutes a law meant to protect the SC/ST community.
