Corona (Covid -19), the disease that brought the world to a standstill and killed millions of people, is no longer a global health emergency. After over three years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday declared that Covid-19 no longer qualifies for Global Health Emergency status.
On 4 May 2023, the Global Health Emergency Committee met and recommended that the Covid-19 crisis is over as a global public health emergency. It has been termed an emergency for global health since 30 January 2020.
According to the Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, "The end of the emergency does not mean the end of COVID as a health threat globally. He also emphasised that the country must not compromise with the measures to deal with Covid and that it needs to be kept alert and prepared despite its changed status. According to the WHO, the COVID death rate came down from a peak of more than 100,000 people per week in January 2021 to just over 3,500 in the week of April 24, 2023, whereas around 7 million people died due to Covid across the world.
In India, a lockdown was declared in March 2020 after the declaration of Covid-19 as a pandemic by the WHO. According to the WHO data, India recorded 44,952,996 confirmed cases of Covid and 531,564 deaths due to Covid till now.
