Urooz Rizvi Hussain: Social activist and entrepreneur

Watch today’s CitySpidey LIVE with 28-year-old social activist and entrepreneur Urooz Rizvi Hussain, who broke societal barriers and came out openly as trans-woman. Hear her story on our Instagram page.

Talking about her struggles Urooz said, “My journey was full of ups and downs but I have never given up, and still I am fighting. I wanted to be an independent person because I don’t want to rely on my family. I have always felt feminine and girlish. My colleagues harassed me, taunted me at my workplace, that’s when I decided to start my own cafe.”

Urooz, winner of Australia's beauty pageant for transgenders, runs a cafe ‘Street Temptations’ in Noida Sector-119. She was born and brought up in Bhagalpur, Bihar, and in 2013 came to Delhi to pursue her dreams.

Urooz shared that running a cafe was her dream, however, due to Covid she had to temporarily keep her cafe closed. Urooz said, “It was my dream to start a cafe a place with no discrimination, where everyone will be treated equally as humans. I started saving money to start my own cafe while I worked at a BPO and in Lalit Hotel.” She also mentioned that she was the first transgender who did a job in Lalit hotel where her co-workers were friendly.

Urooz talked about the role of parents in creating acceptance, awareness and space for the rainbow community. She also emphasised on the role of communication during the LIVE session.

Talking about her most challenging moments, she said, “I never give up on the challenges life has put me through. I take some time to understand the situation because life is full of challenges, and being a trans woman I have to keep winning the challenges that come across for my community”

During the lockdown, Urooz helped the needy and distributed grocery kits to them.

Urooz said, “I want to open an NGO for transgender and educate them”.
