The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is aggressively making all the efforts to push solid waste segregation at source. Currently, the 'Swachha Sarvekshan Abhiyan' is being implemented aggressively.
Their efforts include ward and cluster wise meetings with RWAs, senior citizens groups, women groups, NGOs and corporates. The meetings are being organised to bring everyone on a single platform in a crusade to improve sanitation in the area.
During the meetings, the SDMC officials are also taking feedbacks from the participants about the solid waste management services provided by them.
They are stressing on the segregation of dry waste, wet waste and plastic waste. The corporation has also collaborated with Bisleri to bring 'Bottles for Change' initiative to spread an awareness about clean plastic segregation.
The idea behind the initiative is to make sure that the plastic waste does not go to the dumpyard but directly for recycling.
Manish Meena, Assistant Commissioner, SDMC, said, “If we want to make our areas clean and litter free, all citizens have to take the responsibility of segregating waste in to the three categories, solid waste, dry waste and plastic waste. So that, waste can be disposed effectively and all plastics can be sent for recycling. With each passing day our dump yards are piling up with the waste and source segregation is the only effective way to manage it.”
The 'Bottles for Change' initiative has so far touched 6 lakh individuals, 800 housing societies and over 400 corporates about recycling and recycled more than 5,000 tonnes of segregated plastic.
