Sunita Kangra, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Councillor from Madipur ward, has been elected as the new Mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). Kangra was elected unanimously for this post in the house meeting held on Friday.
Graduate from Delhi University and an active member of the BJP for the last two decades, Sunita Kangra had assumed the position of secretary in the Delhi Mahila Morcha and at the district level. Besides, she was elected from Madipur ward as BJP nominee in 2017 elections.
Another BJP Councillor from Kakrola ward, Raj Datt Gehlot, has been elected unanimously as Deputy Mayor of the SDMC. Councillor Narendra Chawla, Bhupendra Gupta from BJP and Ved Pal from Congress have been elected as members of the Standing Committee.
Immediately after assuming the post, Mayor Sunita Kangra listed her priorities, stating that she would work to improve sanitation, expansion of education facilities including quality education in schools and tackle the problem of parking in the city. Pointing out the fact that challenges are growing in Delhi with urbanisation, she stressed upon the need of making Swachhata a result-oriented effort. She added the shortage of sanitation employees will be taken care and efforts will be made to overcome the shortage.
Answering a question related to financial difficulties in the corporation, the newly-elected Mayor stated that during 2018-19, properties tax collection witnessed substantial hike as it reached 944 crore rupees. It is expected the collection will cross 1000 crore during the next financial year. "We all will work together to provide modern amenities in SDMC localities," Kangra concluded.
