The campaign to rid the sub-city of plastic waste is slowly gaining momentum. Green Circle—a voluntary organisation working on environmental issues in the area—organised a plastic-free drive today in Sector 12 market, which was attended by community workers, schoolchildren, area councillor Nitika Sharma and officials from South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).
Speaking to City Spidey, V Selvarajan, a resident of Diamond Square Apartments in Sector 6, and secretary of Green circle, said, “Plastic is ruining our environment in the worst possible way. It takes a million years to decompose a plastic bag and it’s high time we got rid of them. We have been working on Mission Plastic Free Dwarka for the past one year. Earlier, we were focusing on parks, but now we have included market areas also.” Dwarka News
The drive, which was started last week by social organisations like Paramarthi, Seniors Hub, Morning Walkers Club, was today joined by the members of the market association.
Nitika Sharma, councillor of Dwarka and chairperson of Appointments, Promotions, Disciplinary & Allied Matters Committee, SDMC, encouraged the efforts of the workers. “Green Circle has been doing exceptional work in the area in the form of shramdaan every Saturday for the past one year. Going forward, we will fully support their efforts.”
On the choice of Sector 12 market as the starting point of their campaign, the member of Green Circle said that they solely chose it because it was one of the dirtiest markets in the sub-city. “It is very disturbing to see that the apathy of the civic authorities and residents have turned this market into a dump yard,” lamented Anil Parashar of Mission Clean Dwarka campaign of Green Circle.
Children of Bal Bharati International School also participated in the campaign and made efforts to make the shopkeepers aware about the harmful effects of plastic. President of Federation of CGHS, Dwarka, TP Maniappan, and members N Raja, YP Kukreja, B Subba Rao and Subash Chauhan also joined the drive. T P Maniappan, a regular at the market, said, “The residents of Dwarka would be extremely happy to see this market litter free. Green Circle has cleaned several parks in the area, and now let’s hope they can work their magic here also.”
