Gurgaon: Police arrest 38 people for public drinking over weekend



In a crackdown against the consumption of liquor in public places, the police have arrested 38 people on Saturday and Sunday. The police were getting repeated complaints about the increased incidents of consumption of liquor in public places.
The police said that the consumption of liquor in public places was causing a lot of inconveniences to the people especially the women.

It was informed by the police that they usually arrest on average seven persons every day for public drinking. But, they said that they upped the ante after several complaints started coming in.

The crackdown against the public drinking was escalated last month. There were at least 210 persons who were arrested for public drinking in last one month.

“There were complaints that drinking at public places was causing a nuisance. As such, a drive was carried out across the city on Friday night. Similar drives will be repeated at regular intervals. Routine checks will go on,” Sumit Kuhar, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said.

 The arrests were done from places such as DLF Phase- 2, Sushant Lok-1, Sector 15 market, Sector 56, DLF Phase- 1, MG Road, and Old Gururgam, including Sector 14.

People were also caught in areas directly under police stations, such as Sector 29, Sadar police station, DLF Phase- 2, Civil Lines, Sector 9A, Udyog Vihar, Sector 10, Farrukhnagar and Badshahpur.

People who are accused of consuming alcohol in public are booked under Section 68/1/14 of the Excise Act. The offence is punishable with a fine or imprisonment of up to three months.
