Gurgaon: CM makes fare meter system mandatory in auto-rickshaws

To check the incidents of overcharging commuters, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Monday ordered that all the auto-rickshaws will have to operate with fare meter system.

The CM announced this at the District Grievances Committee meeting held at the Mini-Secretariat on Saturday.
However, it was not the first time when this kind of announcement came from the CM. He had also announced the same during the meeting with the members of the auto-rickshaw union in May last year.

During the meeting on Saturday, Khattar had asked the transport department officials to prepare a proposal for installation of meters with a set fare structure.

“The chief minister said that the capacity of ferrying passengers should also be taken care of, as often, auto drivers ferry passengers more than its actual capacity. He also directed that autos plying without registration numbers and those plied by drivers less than 18 years of age be impounded,” a government spokesperson said.

“We were informed during the meeting that in last one year, 3,68,467 challans were issued in Gurugram district alone and 2,577 autos were also impounded in Gurugram,” he added.

Yogesh Sharma, state general secretary, Haryana Auto Chalak Sanghatan, said that such kinds of announcements always go unfulfilled. He added that there was no headway after the CM’s announcement for fare charts for both CNG and diesel-run autorickshaws.

As per the record of Regional Transport Office (RTO), there are 16,000 diesel-run and 9,000 CNG-run auto-rickshaws which are operating in the city.
