The Ganga water supply to Noida and Ghaziabad will be suspended from Tuesday morning as the Upper Ganga Canal in Haridwar was shut down due to excessive silt deposition after heavy rains in Uttarakhand. Ghaziabad News
SC Arora, a senior project engineer of Jal Department in Noida Authority, told City Spidey that the supply is expected to be suspended until Saturday.
“Heavy rain in Uttarakhand has resulted in silt deposition in the Upper Ganga Canal. The state’s irrigation department has shut the canal late on Sunday night but only informed us about it on Monday. It is expected to remain shut for five days.
“The supply can be resumed a day earlier as well if the silt deposition subsides,” said Arora.
Arora also said that the suspension of Ganga water supply will not create a crisis as they will continue supplying the boring water. He added that they also have stored Ganga water which will be supplied till Monday evening.
An official in Ghaziabad’s Jal board also confirmed the same thing. “Ganga water will not be supplied to Noida and Ghaziabad. The supply may partially resume on Friday if the silt deposition improves. The Uttarakhand irrigation department has decided to shut down supply for five days,” he said.
Peeyush Aggarwal, a resident of Sector-19, said that there is no water crisis as rain wells are working.
“But, the boring water that we are receiving is dirty and is yellow in colour. It also has bad smells. This water is not potable. People are buying water from the market for drinking and other purposes,” said Aggarwal.
The Ganga water is supplied from Haridwar to Dasna through the 185 km long Upper Ganga Canal.
The 19 km long pipeline takes the water to the treatment plant in Pratap Vihar in Ghaziabad. The Ganga water is processed at this plant. Nearly 360 million litres of Ganga water is supplied to Noida and Ghaziabad on daily basis. More than 20 lakh people receive Ganga water for drinking purposes.
