As the farmers’ strike entered the fourth day on Monday, the supply of vegetables has been greatly affected causing a sudden spike in the prices at wholesale and retail markets in Delhi and many other states.
The shortage of supply in wholesale markets has resulted in a huge surge in retail prices.
Vegetable such as ladyfinger, which was sold at Rs 40 per kg till last Friday in the retail market, is now being sold at Rs 60-65. The prices of cucumber and potato have been increased by Rs 10-15 in last two days. The price of tomato, which was at Rs 20 per kg in retail stores, has now increased to Rs 40 per kg in Delhi.
Dinesh Kumar, a vegetable seller in East Delhi told City Spidey that not only the quantity of vegetables has reduced but also poor quality vegetables are being sold in Ghazipur market.
On the other hand, wholesalers in Ghazipur market said that they are receiving poor quality vegetables.
“I usually sell up to 5 quintals of tomatoes every day. But, today, I have got only two quintals which is also of poor quality. Prices of vegetables have increased from Saturday but there was no shortage back then,” Usman, a vegetable wholesaler said.
A member of Ghazipur market association said that these vegetable prices may further increase in next few days.
“On an average 13-15 trucks of vegetables from all neighbouring states arrive here. On Saturday and Sunday, only 13 trucks of vegetables were supplied,” a member said on condition of anonymity.
