Unable to deal with the stress of long-time illness, a 70-year-old man on Monday allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the eighth floor of a residential society in Govindpuram area of Ghaziabad. Ghaziabad news
The deceased was identified as Rajeshwar Prasad Tyagi who was a retired official of the agriculture department.
Tyagi used to live with his wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren in the Gaur Homes society. The incident happened at around 7 am in the morning. At that time, all the other family members were present in the apartment.
According to police, Tyagi was suffering from multiple respiratory ailments which had made him weak and feeble.
“We learnt that he was suffering from TB and asthma. The weight of his body would barely be 40 or 45 kilos and he looked very weak,” said Srinivas Gautam, in charge of Govindpuram police post.
Family members told police that Tyagi could not move freely due to his weakness. They said that he would move with help from family members and would spend most of his time in one place.
“He was sitting on a chair in the balcony before the incident took place. It seems that he somehow climbed on the chair and then fell off the balcony,” Gautam further said.
Residents who knew Tyagi personally said that he was ill for many years now and was worried about his health.
“Over the last six years that I have known him, he would be sick most of the time. He was also stressed and worried about it,” said Shyam Singh Kamboj, a resident of the society.
Police said, “Although no suicide note has been recovered, prima facie it looks like a case of suicide. However, what prompted Tyagi to take the extreme step is unclear.” Police later sent the body for the post-mortem.
Ghaziabad witnessed a similar incident only a few days back when an 88-year-old senile woman fell to her death from a window of an 11th floor flat in Ashiana Upvan society in Indirapuram. Apart from this, the city has witnessed a chain of incidents of people falling off high rises.
