Trade associations in Delhi are set to launch a mega protest on Wednesday (March 28) against the ongoing sealing drive in the city.
As a result, prominent markets in the city, including those of Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bag, Nehru Place and INA will remain closed on that day.
Praveen Khandelwal, general secretary of Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), who confirmed the news while talking to City Spidey on phone, added that the massive protest would be held at the Ramlila ground.
Moreover, businessmen and their employees will participate in the protest with their families. “We have unanimously decided that traders across Delhi will not send their children to schools and colleges on Wednesday to mark the protest,” Khandelwal said.
Traders in Delhi have been hit hard after the three municipal corporations - the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation started sealing business establishments for non-payment of conversion charges, encroachment and illegal constructions.
As per reports, more than 3500 business establishments have been sealed jointly by the three corporations.
The protest march has been jointly organised by CAIT, Delhi traders union and various other unions.
Apart from that, these organisations are also set to observe a shutdown against the sealing drive.
“In the last three months, nearly 40 percent business has dropped in Delhi due to the sealing drive. If sealing is not stopped immediately, the city’s traders will be left with no option but to shift their business to neighbouring towns,” Khandelwal said.
