It is indeed an irony that while Dwarka faces water supply shortage almost every summer, there is no public consciousness to preserve this life-giving resource. Water from DJB supply frequently overflows in the DDA pockets. Leaking and damaged pipelines too are a common sight in the subcity.
The photographs that have been circulated in social media by the residents of the subcity clearly reiterate that particularly in the last two months wastages have been considerable.
AK Parashar, a resident of Sri Agrasen Apartments, Sector 7, shared, “A damaged pipeline near the signal that separates Sector 6 and 7 has caused water logging on the road. After I followed up with the authorities it was repaired but very half heartedly. The leakage continues. Infact, yesterday I again apprised the authorities about the situation with a photograph of the spot. The area around the damaged pipeline is unsafe for bikers too. More importantly, the leakage has caused water shortage in the surrounding sectors. DJB should take corrective steps soon.” Dwarka News
City Spidey has identified some permanent leakages in the main pipe lines of different sectors like Sector 13 (near Netaji Subhash Apartments) and Sector 6 (near Akash Ganga Apartments). Diwan Singh, an environment activist working on water conservation, said, “Delhi Jal Board can save lakhs of litres if it just repairs the leakages. However, they are surprisingly callous.”
Water in the DDA pockets is often wasted when residents operate booster pumps. Ramesh Mumukshu, vice president of RWA of Sector 16B, said, “DJB should employ strict measures against residents who let their tanks overflow and callously use booster pumps.”
On a recent visit to Dwarka, Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal who is also the president of DJB fielded some tough questions from environment activists. Though the CM directed all DJB officials present at the meeting to rectify the existing situation, the residents and environment activists of the subcity are far from allayed. For they have heard many empty promises in the past.
