Ever since officials of the district town planning department removed six iron gates in Gurgaon’s Palam Vihar, incidents of theft have increased, causing concern among residents. Last Friday was one such day, when at least two thefts took place in the colony. This had residents questioning the move to remove the iron gates, where earlier an eye was kept on who was entering the colony.
Officials had removed the gates following a complaint by a resident that they were causing traffic snarls. But now the colony has become open to all, adding to the security concerns of the residents.
Other than the two thefts in two houses, countless petty thefts have been taking place. Most vulnerable are the side mirrors of the cars parked outside the houses in the colony, residents said. “The residents did not report the theft of side mirrors but we are investigating all thefts in the area,” said a police official. “Security has been a huge concern in Palam Vihar. We don’t feel safe with so many thefts taking place so frequently,” said a resident. Incidentally, missing side mirrors of cars is something that is not limited to Palam Vihar alone. Reports are coming from other colonies too, residents say.
