Commuters moving from Noida to Delhi through the Akshardham flyover will encounter chaotic traffic for the next 15 days as the Public Works Department (PWD) is carrying out work for filling the gaps between girders on the road. Surprisingly, the repair work was started today evening when traffic was at its peak on this stretch. Exactly a week has passed after these six inches (approximately) wide gaps were reported.
This flyover connects Akshardham road with the Noida link road and part of it will remain inaccessible to commuters during this 15 day period.
Similar gaps between girders were also recently spotted on the Lajpat Nagar flyover situated on the Ring Road. However, no causality was reported from any of the flyovers and traffic has also not been disrupted.
Earlier when these gaps were spotted and reported, PWD minister, Satyender Jain of the Delhi Government had said that gaps between girders is a normal phenomenon during winters and not a reason for worry.
The Akshardham-Noida road is one of the busiest stretches in the city which connects Noida, Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and New Ashok Nagar with ITO and other areas of East Delhi.
Gapes between girders is a natural contraction and will be fixed through expansion joints. When asked why repair work was not started immediately after the gaps were reported, Prakash Kumar supervisor (PWD) said, “We can start repair work only after getting approval from the traffic department. The approval came through today.”
