It has been nearly 15 years since Delhi Development Authority (DDA) constructed a two-storey building adjacent to Janta market. The building was to serve as the neighbourhood shopping complex to 45 co-operative group housing societies (CGHS) in the vicinity.
But there’s no market, and DDA officials have not a clue about when shop allotment is to begin — or if it will begin at all!
JP Sharma, general secretary of Vasundhara Enclave CGHS Federation, explains, “Janata market is as old as the housing societies. It has been here for the past 25 years. In 2000-2001, half the market was demolished and a two-storey building was constructed. The idea was to beat illegal encroachment by vendors on the market premises. Construction of the building was completed sometime around 2003-2004. But no shop allotment has been done.”
The building has about 20 big rooms. It has been facilitated with a lift at the back.
Dipender Singh, who runs a stationery shop in Janata market, says, “Many of us want to purchase shops in the building. After the building was completed, the market association had a meeting with DDA. But I don’t know any longer what DDA plans to do with it.”
City Spidey also spoke to Dilip Singh, a junior engineer with DDA. When asked whether DDA had some other plan for the building, he said, “I have no idea.”
