Residents of Dwarka have started preparing for World Environment Day (June 5) by planning tree-planting and awareness drives.
An assorted group of senior citizens, youth and children from Sector 7 has planned a plant-adoption programme this weekend.
One of the pioneers of the concept and a resident of Brahma Apartments in Sector 7, Munish Kundra, said, "At 5 pm this Saturday, our group, along with children from the Don Bosco Ashalayam, are going to adopt plants at the Sector 7 park. The ones adopting will also be responsible for taking care of the plants."
Green Circle, an NGO, has planned a tree-planting and adoption drive in the park at Sector 6, near Diamond Square Apartments. Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi (SDKS), a social organisation that has planned several pro-environment drives in the sub-city, will start an annual tree-planting programme from June 5. Secretary of SDKS and a resident of Chitrakoot Apartments, Sector 22, Prem Bihari Mishra, said, "Like every year we will be celebrating Environment Day for a week. We will start on June 5. Also, that day on we will start our annual tree-planting drive, which will be continued September. Till now we have planted about 5,000 trees in the area. We not only plant but also look after them on a daily basis."
Federation of RWAs of Sector 9 (FORWAS) will also be organising a tree-planting drive on June 5.
Association of Neighbourhood Ladies Get-Together (ANHLGT), one of the most active groups in the sub-city, will be carrying out pro-environment awareness campaigns in parks and market areas. "We have planned a range of campaigns and activities for World Environment Day," said Cicily Kodiyan, president of ANHLGT and a resident of Sheetal Vihar Apartments in Sector 23. "Last month, we started a campaign to make societies aware of eco-friendly ways to embrace greenery. We have a tree-planting programme planned in the first week of June."
